At Ackerman’s, we’re always on the lookout for innovations that enhance the durability and longevity of our structures. A new post system we recently started using has seriously extended the life of our posts—a game-changer for our hoop buildings and other post-set structures.
Why Standard Posts Don’t Hold Up
Traditional wooden posts often surrender to rot and decay at the ground line, especially when encased in concrete. You’d think concrete would protect wood, right? But here’s why it doesn’t; Concrete doesn’t let water evaporate, trapping it right up against the wood, making it prime real estate for rotting.
What Makes This New Post Different?
Our new post addresses the rotting problem head-on. Each post is enveloped in a heavy-duty polyethylene wrap lined with bitumen, a waterproof substance similar to tar. When heat is applied, the bitumen liquefies, penetrating the wood and creating a robust moisture barrier. The outer polyethylene layer then shrinks tightly around the post, sealing it against external elements.
But the innovation doesn’t stop there.
Strategically placed uplift restraint notches are key when you’re setting the post in concrete. These notches give the concrete something to grip onto. Once the concrete hardens around the notches, the post is locked in place much more securely than a smooth post would be, effectively resisting wind-induced post withdrawal.
Why It’s a Win for Hoop Buildings
- Enhanced Durability: The dual-layer protection significantly increases the life of posts, protecting them against rot, termites, and harmful soil conditions.
- Structural Stability: The uplift restraint notches act like anchors, so the wind can’t easily “suck” the post out.
- Ease of Installation: Lighter and easier to install, requiring no special anchors.
- Eco-Friendly: The materials used are non-toxic, making them safe for environmentally sensitive applications.
What About Cost?
While these new posts may have a higher upfront cost compared to traditional posts, the long-term savings are considerable. By significantly extending the lifespan of your posts and reducing maintenance needs, these innovative posts offers a cost-effective solution over time.
